In that time while it was downloading and installing, I was able to:

Make a tuna salad brunch

Create a party in Ragnarok Online 2, level up 4 times, and complete at least 12 quests

Figure out what the hell the Trading Card Beta is for Steam only not to be surprised it’s Steam’s e-peen

Organize my desktop and a few other folders

Test the Avermedia Gamer Portable capture card some more (my HDMI pass-through still doesn’t work (Fix it, Alex))

Play an entire quick, duel map campaign of Civ V (Hell yeah, Genghis)

Drop off my sister at her friend’s house 20 miles away

Strike up a conversation with my dad after work about life, death, and lyme disease. Also, Bruins.

Read 100 pages of a guide to making a site with Drupal

Fool around with said Drupal (Our site is going to be tits)

It was then that the game finally said it was go time at 5:48pm. For those who can’t time that’s 7 and a half hours of patching. Holy galactic, dog legs.

And before you jump on me about speed and redownloading the game again, I did. I also post an average 35d/30u internet speed with a fiber optic network so it’s not on this end, sister. I’d like to scrape this off on CCP but I can’t help but point a finger at the Playstaion Network for all this. It’s not like anyone’s has problems like this with them before, right? Pfft. Netcode.

Hope this game was worth all the hassle and is actually f-.. ff-.. funnn.

Video

: The New XBox and What It Take to Love It

: The New XBox and What It Take to Love It:
notaverycleverman:

vidyarelatedstuffhappens:

On May 21st, Microsoft is set to unleash their new household game box into the next generation console race. But what will it take for them to be the front runner in sales? They can’t be the early bird like this generation since the WiiU is already out (though many say calling it next-gen is…

My biggest problem with the XBOX and just Microsoft’s setup for the console race is honestly everyone else has free online service for multiplayer EXCEPT Xbox. People still argue “Well PS3 still has no games” or “Well I don’t want my personal information stolen!” and to continue saying PS3 has no games at this point is asinine and if you’re THAT paranoid about your information being stolen why aren’t you ordering pay cards online?

The only argument that’s barely believable is “Microsoft has more stable online play than PS3” and while I personally haven’t experienced any difference in the two, I have noticed terrible netcode for games such as BlazBlue or Soul Calibur, which to my knowledge is more on fault with the devs than it is Sony.

Tl;dr Microsoft needs to drop payed subscription for online if they want my money. Otherwise everything I could want to play on Xbox is available on PS3 or PC.

The New XBox and What It Takes to Love It

On May 21st, Microsoft is set to unleash their new household game box into the next generation console race. But what will it take for them to be the front runner in sales? They can’t be the early bird like this generation since the WiiU is already out (though many say calling it next-gen is debatable). Microsoft has to bring something to the show that will keep the masses in its grasp and their money out of their wallets. We asked the staff at VSR what Microsoft needs in its next console to succeed.

If it looks like this, someone is getting punched

‘Ruse: While the whole social network thing sounds convenient, I don’t see it being a deal-breaker between 500+ dollar hardware.

I believe the trick to winning the war this time around is to concentrate on the games, meaning third party support. Last generation was all about control, which lead to tonnes of sub-par games relying soley on their respective console’s controller gimmick. This generation, I think the masses are looking for a more grass-roots game style, which means the easier your console is to develop for, the better you’re going to make out. Unfortunately, the PS4 has already targeted this concept. Microsoft is gonna need some kind of incentive beyond ‘social interconnectivity’ to outdo them this time.

Also, please drop the Kinect. Everyone is over the motion control schtick, stop trying to shoehorn it into everything.

Spencer: Change nothing. No, seriously. Major Nelson can come on stage and say the box has quantum processing and 2 pentaflops of capable memory, but all anyone will ask is, “Well, yeah, but can I watch Netflix on it?” Keep on keeping on with the Peter Molyneux approach and just have it do everything. It can play Netflix, you can watch Hulu, have ESPN streamed right to your face, jive out to Justin Bieber, and order a pizza by waving your hands; all of this and, oh by the way, it can play some games, too. Just promise everything. And if that falls through, who cares? You have the largest buying fan base on Call of Duty. If it can play Call of Duty, what does Microsoft have to worry about?

Joe: Dear Micro$oft,

All I want from the Durango is for you to make me stop putting dollar signs in your name.

Sincerely,

This is the Sorceress from Vanillaware’s Dragon’s Crown. Lately, this character has been getting a lot of heat, becoming the new icon of sexism in video games. Are you offended by this character? Do you find it sexist? Well guess what, it’s not.

It includes the usually minimum and recommended specifications any release would have in this modern age. But there’s something that jumped out at me in the “Optimal System Requirements” section.

Optimum System Requirements

Windows: Vista, 7 or 8
CPU: 3.4 GHz Multi-Core e.g. Intel Core i7
RAM: 8GB
Hard Disc Space: 7.5 GB
Direct X: 11
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 690 / GeForce TITAN

Yeah, 4A? Really? You want me to go out and buy a Titan, a $1000 USD graphics card, to play your game at max? Am I made of money? And if I am, why haven’t you told me, you secret keeper?

This one boss (a mini boss at that) was the bane of my existence years ago. I lost count how many times I had to face it down before I finally beat it, but there was no sweeter nectar to savor than that of watching the guardian lay dead in defeat. It was a well developed, admirable foe worthy in my eyes of mounting on my digital wall. Growing up on gaming, I’ve found these battles lead to great, personal gaming moments and to be cornerstones of the game play experience. In this modern day with more exceptional ways for storytelling, however, the place for epic, staged battles is starting to come into question.

You face down some minions then you fight a boss. You learn some new skills, you fight some more foes, and then apply your new knowledge to another, harder boss. Rinse and repeat until you get to the finale of the game. Here the story comes to a climatic end where everything you’ve learned comes down to this one moment: you versus the final boss. That is unless he’s a big jerk and reveals his true form or, in some games, his ultimate, final, true form. Those aside, this was the generic formula for most games created before this modern era. For the most part, it worked. Most developers used this formula as the base for their game play, slapped some layers of story on it, sprinkled some originality and they got a quality game. Where those “originality sprinkles” stood out in most titles were at the end of levels. Ask any game enthusiastic some of their favorite moments in gaming and most will sound like, “Oh man. Castlevania, when you get to the end and Dracula pops out as the music drops. Chills. All worth it once you see that castle fall down in the end.”

Using the “boss end cap” formula over and over again lost it gusto over the years not because no one had any creative bones left to grind but that story had very little ways of being full expressed with the limits of now older hardware. Today, with near limitless amount of resource at developers’ disposal, they can fashion tales that would make a Hollywood studio blush. Games are now filled with huge plot twists, swerves in story, and graphical detail to capture all the emotion. Set pieces are taken to new heights and if you string a lot together you get games that are marvels of digital entertainment. But with all this great writing and showmanship you’d think there would be just as great boss battles, right? … Right?

Sleeping Dogs, a modern day, open world, beat-em-up with a pinch of throwback to old, kung-fu movies has a great story of loyalty and betrayal. The last enemy of the game feels no different than the hundreds of others you crane kicked to the floor. Hotline Miami, a top down, indie shooter with marvelous visuals, sound, and a twist near the end that makes your head tilt slightly to the right, should be a benchmark of what small developers should aim to develop. The ending, however, leaves you hollow with a short fight and little control of some of the final actions. Some games have some good setup for a great boss battle, like the Warrior from Borderlands 2, but fail to have a different kind of tension compared to some of the other ecstatic moments. The list can go on and on but the point is that this trend is on the rise.

I’m all for the improvement of storytelling. Originality comes from many sources; you either make the mold better or you break out of it. But with many studios breaking out to differentiate themselves, there’s a feeling of some origin roots being left to die. There are still people making good use of boss battle staple (Dark Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution), but the big question is will we lose the grand stage feel to an awesome but stretched out experience?

I’m not one to stroke egos but I give credit where...

I’m not one to stroke egos but I give credit where it’s due. Ruse is the best gamer out of all the VSR team in strategy and skill, hands down. But don’t worry though. The man knows it. The man flaunts it.
